Welcome To Our Department


The Post-Graduate and Research Department of Mathematics conduct Bachelor’s Degree Course in Mathematics (B.Sc Mathematics) and also a Masters Degree Course in Mathematics (M.Sc Mathematics) with specialization in computer/mathematical programming. The department is also an active research unit of the Mahatma Gandhi University. There are 6 full time and 4 adhoc faculty members in the department.

Rev. Dr. Augustineo Konnully Served St. Alberts College as a Mathematics Professor during the period 1949-1983 and as Principal during  1973-78. He was a great mathematician and philosopher acclaimed national and internationally. He published his research papers in international journals like American Mathematical Monthly, Journal of London Mathematical Society, Academia Nazionie Dei Lincei(Italy), BeitraZur Algebra and Geometrie (Germany), The Journal of the Australian Mathematical Society etc. His works include “Perspective Simplexes and Tucker Quadrics”, “IsogonalConjugates in En”, “Pivot Theorems in n-Space”, An Incidence Relationship of Hypersphere in En”, and so on. He introduced a new concept in mathematics which holds the name “Vector Multipliers”. He was the first person to acquire Ph.D in Mathematics from the University of Kerala at the time when this was the only University in Kerala.

To prepare a student such that, when leaving college after completion of a course, he/she is equipped with a positive frame of mind, has basic mathematical and  communication skills, should have acquired the ability to explain something logically, and above all, should have developed a balanced personality.

Department at a glance


St. Albert’s College was established  in 1946. The very next year, in 1947 B.A. Degree course in Mathematics started. By 1964 M.A. Post graduate degree course started . Later on these courses were renamed as B.Sc. Mathematics and M.Sc. Mathematics respectively.  Many eminent professors worked in the department. Chev. P T Thomas, Rev. Dr. Augustine Konnully, Prof. A J Peter, Rev. Fr. Raphael Ollattupuram are a few to mention. At present, the department is known as the Rev.Dr. A.O. Konnully Memorial Research Centre and P G Department of Mathematics.

Rev. Dr. Augustine O Konnully was a world-renowned mathematician and philosopher. He published his research papers in international journals like American Mathematical Society, Journal of London Mathematical Society, Academia Nazionie Dei Lincei(Italy), Beitra Zur Algebra and Geometrie(Germany), The Journal of the Ausstralian Mathematical Society etc. His works include “Perspective Simplexes and Tucker Quadrics”, Isogonal Conjugates in En”, “Pivot Theorems in n-space”, “An incidence relationship of Hypersphere in En” and so on. He introduced a new concept in mathematics which holds the name “Vector multipliers”. The rarest while University of Kerala honored him by awarding Ph.D. degree. The University also conferred him with Professor Emirates. 

The department of Mathematics was elevated to a research centre in 1998 under the leadership of Dr. Souriar Sebastian. At present the department has 3 research guides and 7 research scholars working under them. Also the department have its credit of 55 research papers published in various national and international journals.

Welcome to Department of Mathematics, St. Albert’s College, Ernakulam….!

A O Konnully Memorial Research Centre and Department of Mathematics stand as a source of knowledge to its students and entrusts them with the responsibility to share what they have received with the society and the world at large. Thus it aims at creating a better society in all respects.

Since its inception in 1946, Department has emphasized the need of curricular, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities for an all-inclusive development of the students. To actualize them in real terms, there are various clubs, associations, cells and committees in the Department. Faculty members are entrusted with the responsibility of these units. The multi-faceted activities planned and organized by them provide an enriching experience which would enable the students to reach new heights in their professional life. Our focus is on providing quality education, curriculum development, initiating skill development programmes, research and reaching out to the community.

We are fortunate to be backed by a team of highly talented, dedicated and committed faculty members. With a very amiable and professional environment, our faculty members make substantial contribution to the academia through quality teaching, curriculum design, publications, conferences, etc. They are actively involved in their pursuit of creating and disseminating knowledge through teaching, research and training. The corporate and industry interactions not only provide hands-on experience but also help in placement of our students.
