The Department of Economics, St. Albert’s College (Autonomous), Ernakulam has a rich tradition of over 73 years. The department has a reputation for creating good citizens with personal and social responsibilities. The Department of Economics was established in 1946 with a Pre- University course and in 1947, Degree course in Economics was introduced. In 2013, the department was upgraded to a Post Graduate Department in the college. The Department has a long history of organizing regional, national and international seminars, invited lectures and workshops. The Department has a student strength of above 200 with 6 permanent faculties.

Recent Developments


1.E-learning Platform for students:

Soft copies of the learning materials are uploaded to the digital library and the students can access it at any time. Google Classroom and Google meet are used for taking classes and to provide assignments to the students.

2.Career Development Training:

One of the most notable achievements of the department is the career advancement support providing to the students. Practical Training sessions on the Civil Service Exam, Free PSC Coaching to the poor students, Training for RBI B Grade Officers, etc are some of the remarkable practices.

3.Skill Development Training Programs:

Over the last several years the department has been conducting skill development training for the students. The major objective of this is to help the poor students to find out a source of income for them. Jelly candle making, Painting, flower making, pen making, etc are the different craftworks training provided to the students.

4 .Social Extension Activities:

One of the most important duties of the department is to mold the students into socially responsible citizens. To achieve this aim the department is conducting many activities like Human rights awareness Street plays in different schools, ‘Spend a day with the Orphan Children’, ‘Tea with Parents’, House Visits, Cleaning of public spaces as part of Swach Bharat Mission, Environment related studies and environment-friendly practices, etc

5.MOOC Courses:

UGC has sanctioned two MOOC Courses in UGC-SWAYAM platform for Miss. Linda George, Assistant Professor, Department of Economics. ‘Economic History of India from 1857 to 1947’ and ‘Environmental Economics’ are the two courses approved by the UGC. The course on ‘Economic History of India from 1857 to 1947’ was launched on 29th May 2020. 

6.Certificate Program on Banking and RBI Grade B Officers Training:

Department of Economics launched first certificate program in the college during the academic year 2019-2020. The certificate program offers 60hr program schedule comprising of Current affairs (11 hrs), Reasoning (22 hrs),Quantitative (17hr) and English (10hrs) along with exams and assignments to evaluate the students progress.

Message from HoD


The Department of Economics was established in 1946 with a Pre- University course and in 1947, Degree course in Economics was introduced. In 2013, the department was upgraded to a Post Graduate Department in the college. The Department of Economics has recorded a consistent improvement in its academic, research and placement performance. It provides a variety of resourcefully designed courses whose curriculum are continuously modernized to meet the changing requirement of the modern world and to meet the needs of the students. Department of Economics launched a first certificate program in the college during the academic year 2019-2020. I hope all our students will well accept in their career and consistently exceed the expectations of the current world. The set of courses are educated by the eminent faculty members by combining academic brilliance and real-world knowledge with devotion and commitment.
